‘agate ware vessel’ by jojo rowley £90 (including p &P)
This Agate Ware vessel is made from porcelain clay. To create the patterns, clay to which Jojo adds ceramic stains, is positioned within the porcelain clay ball prior to throwing on the potters’ wheel. In this way the pattern is an integral part of the form and not a decoration added on afterwards. The positioning of the coloured clay allows for both precise and random effects. With these forms Jojo is taking inspiration from the patterns in nature and is therefore seeking a more blurred random pattern.
The name Agate ware is derived from the Agate stone, which when sliced shows multicoloured layers.
Once fired the exterior, which is left unglazed is sanded until beautifully smooth to the touch. The interior has a clear glaze added before the final firing.
